I'm not sure I can give you many helpful tips, especially since I mainly just use pencil. But one thing I've found is that as my art has got better I've used more shading- when I started off my drawings were practically outlines with a little shading (although I was using crappy light pencils). Do you want to do portraits or just general realism?
I think another thing is paying attention to the little details in a pic which will add a bit more realism.
